Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will directly provide death certificates to the families of those who died in the Air India crash, making the process quicker and easier during this difficult time.
A team led by the deputy collector has been formed to talk to the families of foreign nationals who died in the crash.
The Gujarat government has set up a system to ensure that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation gives immediate death certificates to the families of those who died in the Air India crash, a government official said on Saturday.
“We’ve set up a system so families don’t face any paperwork hassles later. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will give death certificates on the spot,” said Alok Pandey, Relief Commissioner of the Gujarat government.
He added that even village-level officials will give families the necessary documents right away to help them avoid any problems with inheritance or succession later.
A team led by the deputy collector has been formed to speak with the families of foreign nationals who died in the crash, Pandey said. Most of the relatives are expected to arrive by Sunday afternoon, he added.
Dr. Rajnish Patel, Additional Superintendent of Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, said they have matched the DNA of 11 victims so far. By Saturday evening, the bodies of three victims had been handed over to their families.
Any family member who has given a DNA sample, or any other relative with an ID or document proving their relationship, can come and collect the body.
Arrangements have been made to ensure that ambulances will be accompanied by police escorts all the way to the victims’ villages.
Even after more than two days since the crash, authorities still haven’t confirmed the exact number of deaths.
There were 242 people on board the flight to London Gatwick on Thursday, including the crew. Only one passenger survived.
The plane crashed into buildings where students from BJ Medical College were staying. The exact number of people who died on the ground is still not clear.
Dr. Dhaval Ganeti, president of the Junior Doctors Association at BJ Medical College, told news agency PTI that 270 bodies had been brought to Civil Hospital from the crash site.
