Army Chief Grants Commanders Authority for Ceasefire Breach Response.

General Upendra Dwivedi

Following the ceasefire breaches along the western border on the night of May 10, General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff, held a comprehensive review of the security situation with senior Army commanders on Sunday.

An official announcement via social media indicated that General Upendra Dwivedi has authorized Army commanders to undertake decisive military operations in the ‘kinetic domain’ in the event of any violations of the ceasefire agreement established during the DGMO discussions on May 10.

The ADG PI- Indian Army stated in a post on X that following the ceasefire and airspace infringements on the night of May 10-11, 2025, General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff, assessed the security situation with the Army Commanders stationed at the Western Borders.

The Chief of Army Staff has conferred complete authority upon the Army Commanders to respond decisively in the kinetic domain to any breach of the agreement established during the Director General of Military Operations discussions on May 10, 2025.

Following the ceasefire, explosions from air-defense systems were heard in cities close to the border, which continued to experience blackout conditions for the third consecutive night.

India reported that Pakistan breached the ceasefire shortly after its commencement. In a televised address late Saturday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated, ‘In the past few hours, there have been multiple breaches of the agreement reached earlier this evening.’ He added, ‘The armed forces are responding adequately and appropriately to these breaches. We urge Pakistan to take necessary measures to rectify these violations and to handle the situation with the seriousness and responsibility it demands.’

The ceasefire was intended to halt four days of conflict that ensued after a fatal terrorist assault on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals. The accord was established directly between the two nations without any preconditions.
